Family vignerons for 3 generations with 12 hectares situated 15km west of Epernay. His father first sold Champagne under the Charpentier name in 1954, this however is a seperate family enterprise which Jacky and his wife Claudine established in 1974.
One of the highest respected grower/producers- Jacky Charpentier once headed the Syndicat General des Vignerons de la Champagne- the professional organisation responsible for the needs of 4,700 Champagne growers- of which more than half are recoltant-manipulants(grower/producers). Jacky's son Jean-Marc is now at the helm and is leading this property to greater fame and recognition.
Situated at Villers-sous-Chatillon in the Marne Valley, this is Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir territory. All the big houses source their Pinot Meunier from the villages on the northern side of the Marne river, with this being one of the 4 prestige premium villages along with Vandieres, Verneuil and Vanteuil.
To showcase what can be achieved with Pinot Meunier- Charpentier release the Prestige Cuvee 'Pierre-Henri Vielles Vignes' -100% Pinot Meunier from 56 year old vines, totally vinified in small oak barriques with no malo-lactic fermentation, no fining and no filtration and is an absolute knockout.
This is a name to watch, and the entire range are well worth discovering. This may just shake your preconceptions of the humble Pinot Meunier- but let us not forget how Krug also use the Meunier to great effect.
