The house of Pol-Roger has always had very strong ties with the British due to the association and friendship of Odette Pol Roger and Winston Churchill. He was no stranger to the brand before they met however, as he had been on the books as a customer since 1908 as he was a huge fan of the 1895. It is said that Winston enjoyed a bottle of Pol-Roger every day throughout the Second World War and when Pol decided to release their flagship wine - was so named in his memory. The blend of 'Sir Winston Churchill' is a well guarded family secret -but we do know that only Grand Cru Pinot and Chardonnay are used-and are sourced from the same vineyards used in the 1895
In Australia, there is also a large, loyal following for Pol-Roger which I believe is primarily due to the efforts of Christian Pol-Roger who has been gracing our shores for decades. Although now officially retired, Christian was here to showcase the new release of 'Sir Winston Churchill' and to visit the many friends he has made over the years in this country.
A small gathering of the trade collected at Brisbanes 'Isis' restaurant to welcome the new releases. Simon Hill a former state finalist of the Vin de Champagne awards and owner of 'Isis' once again proved his skills of food and Champagne combinations- and I can't recommend the restaurant highly enough (it is also one of the last fine dining restaurants that you can bring a special bottle to)

Pol Roger Vintage 1999- (6 years on lees) Pale, white gold in colour, On the nose-toasty, nutty with subtle spice notes. Big and powerful on the palate yet wonderful harmony and balance. Very expressive and weighty - needing time to really show its best. Only the first pressing is used and it's all Grand and premier cru fruit. Lovely fine bead that danced on the tongue combined with terrific length on the finish- Opened up beautifully in the glass
Pol Roger Blanc de Blanc 1999- typical honey, toast and spice from the Chardonnay fruit. Ethereal and heady, with a spicey, fennel/aniseed edge. Opulent and forward, developing fatness in the glass with the toastiness becoming more pronounced as it evolved in the glass
Pol Roger Rose 2000-Pale salmon colour, on the nose- soft red berry/strawberry fruit- a confectionary-cream nose -almost devonshire-tea like. Ripe dark berry fruits on the front palate with a long vanilla bean aftertaste
Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 1998 - subtle, slight cream and floral nose- on the palate incredibly defined, linear with a mineral purity. Chardonnay at the fore currently but at the core there is a tightly wound coil of pristine fruit just hinting at its future. Precise and profound- it is just so youthful and unevolved at present- it is merely giving a teasing peak of its future potential. There is no doubting how great this wine will become.
